A strong increase in activity began last night at the volcano. Lava flowing from the Pacaya volcano near Guatemala City has prompted the evacuation of people living nearest the crater, Guatemala authorities said today.

Accompanied by steeply rising tremor, the so-far mild strombolian activity picked up to become intense enough to produce pulsating lava fountains that eject glowing material to several hundred meters height and is visible from tens of kilometers distance (e.g. the Pacific coast at 50 km to the west).

The new surge of lava (or paroxysm) has also generated a new lava flow, which for the time being is confined to the inside of the Mackenney crater, but might soon be able to pour outside of the cone.

Alejandro Maldonado, director of the National Office for Disaster Reduction, said lava is flowing down one side of the volcano, but he did not say how many people have been evacuated.

Local news media report the number is small so far. The volcano has also been closed to tourists.

The National Institute of Seismology, Volcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology says today’s lava flow in some areas is as large as 600 yards wide and 1.8 miles (3km) long.

The volcano just south of the capital city is also registering small explosions and emitting gas and ash.

Pacaya is one of Guatemala’s most active and picturesque volcanos.

As a response, CONRED has closed access to the park and civil aviation authority has limited the number of flights in and out of Guatemala airport because of the presence of ash plumes.

About Earth Changes Media w/ Mitch Battros

Mitch Battros is a scientific journalist who is highly respected in both the scientific and spiritual communities due to his unique ability to bridge the gap between modern science and ancient text. Founded in 1995 – Earth Changes TV was born with Battros as its creator and chief editor for his syndicated television show. In 2003, he switched to a weekly radio show as Earth Changes Media. ECM quickly found its way in becoming a top source for news and discoveries in the scientific fields of astrophysics, space weather, earth science, and ancient text. Seeing the need to venture beyond the Sun-Earth connection, in 2016 Battros advanced his studies which incorporates our galaxy Milky Way - and its seemingly rhythmic cycles directly connected to our Solar System, Sun, and Earth driven by the source of charged particles such as galactic cosmic rays, gamma rays, and solar rays. Now, "Science Of Cycles" is the vehicle which brings the latest cutting-edge discoveries confirming his published Equation.
