Rescue teams in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh are on standby as a massive cyclone hurtled towards the southeastern coast. Indian Meteorological Department chief LS Rathore said on Friday, “Hudhud has turned into a very severe cyclonic storm”.

Eleven teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh while another four teams are on their way as part of the state’s preparations for Cyclone Hudhud expected to make landfall near Visakhapatnam on Sunday.

Authorities have been stocking up rations and evacuating people from coastal districts ahead of the cyclone that is expected to pack wind speeds of 140 kilometres per hour.

“Medical teams with requisite medical equipment, four helicopters and two fixed-wing aircraft are also on standby,” said a naval official. “Some 20 rescue teams of 10 personnel each are on standby and two ships with medical stores are also on standby.”

Chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu reviewed the situation with chief secretary IYR Krishna Rao and asked the administration to be ready for the storm and heavy rains expected in Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Visakhapatnam and East Godavari districts.

Deputy chief minister KE Krishna Murthy said district collectors of coastal districts have been instructed to monitor the progress of the cyclone and take precautionary measures.

“We have taken steps to evacuate people from vulnerable areas to safety wherever required,” he said.

Weather officials said the cyclone could skip Odisha, but the state was not taking chances.

The state government has 16 NDRF teams ready to help the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) with rescue operations and the navy also has three diving teams at Chilka lake.

“It is sheer luck that Cyclone Hudhud’s impact on Odisha will be much less than expected earlier as it has veered towards Andhra Pradesh,” said an officer engaged in relief and rehabilitation operations.
